Just when you thought January would be spent on the sofa, eating leftover chocolate coins, and counting down the days until the 6 Nations starts…it is back, DODDIE AID 2024. And our NEW Doddie Aid app is THE way to take part.
WHAT IS DODDIE AID?
Doddie Aid is a mass participation event, encouraging you to get active for 6 weeks from 1 January and raise funds to help find a cure to motor neuron disease. It was founded by former Scotland captain and British and Irish Lion, Rob Wainwright, and over the last three years has seen over 60,000 participants cover 8 million miles and raise over £4 million for the Foundation. The event splits participants into six districts, with the winning district being the one which covers the furthest distance over the duration of the event. To take part and claim your free district snood, simply download the Doddie Aid app and sign up to a district by making a donation. Miles can be logged via the app - gallop, run, cycle, swim, dance, hop, skip, row, roll – any form of exercise counts. You can even get competitive with friends and family using our leagues feature.
WHO CAN TAKE PART?
EVERYONE. There’s a district for all participants. Whether you live in your kilt and walk your haggis each morning, or just enjoy Gerard Butler films – we’re encouraging everyone from across the world to take part.
Scots have multiple districts to choose from, and we’d encourage everyone from outside Scotland to join the Barbarians (rest of world) team.
WHO IS DODDIE?
Doddie Weir OBE was one of rugby’s most recognisable personalities. He earned 61 caps for Scotland during a successful playing career, represented the British and Irish Lions on their successful tour to South Africa in 1997, and won championships with his two club sides, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons.
A talented, committed and athletic lock forward, Doddie then faced his biggest challenge. In June 2017 the Scot revealed he was suffering from motor neuron disease. From the outset, Doddie was driven to help fellow sufferers and seek ways to further research into this, as yet, incurable disease.
In November 2017, Doddie and his trustees launched the registered charity, My Name’5 Doddie Foundation. Our vision is simple: A World Free of MND.
WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
Motor neuron disease (MND) is a terminal illness. There is no cure.
But we want to change that. Our vision is a World Free of MND and we won’t stop until we’ve accomplished our goal.
By taking part, you will be part of the cure – and have a heck of a lot of fun at the same time!
